Caring For Your Vintage Rugs

Caring For Your Vintage Rugs

Handmade vintage rugs are woven textiles traditionally crafted in regions like Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan and surrounding areas. Made from natural fibres like wool or cotton and often dyed with plant-based pigments, vintage rugs are both functional and artistic treasures.

YUVA rugs are almost all made from 100% wool which helps them to be robust and ideal for family life. Wool is a durable natural fibre that can withstand years of foot traffic and it is also naturally stain repellant. With a small amount of care, our rugs will last for many years to come.

Here are some general care instructions:

1. Regular Cleaning

  • Vacuuming: vacuum once a week (or less in low traffic areas). Use the low suction mode on your vacuum cleaner and vacuum with the weave (not across it) to protect the rug’s structure.
  • Shake it off: gently shake or beat the rug outdoors every few months to remove dust. Avoid too much force, especially with older rugs.
  • Air it out: on a warm sunny day, once or twice a year, hang your rug out on the washing line to allow the sun and air to freshen it up and reduce allergens. Be careful not too leave it out too long, prolonged sun exposure can cause fading and damage. This was the primary way that the nomads cleaned their rugs as the UV rays from the sun act as a natural disinfectant.

2. Spot Cleaning

  • Act fast: blot (don't rub) with a clean, absorbent cloth
  • Detergent: use water sparingly. If needed, mix with a small amount of white vinegar or mild wool-safe soap. Avoid commercial carpet cleaners, they're too harsh for natural dyes and fibres.

3. Storage

  • Roll it up: roll instead of folding your rug with the pattern side inward
  • Wrap it: in breathable cotton fabric, avoid plastic as it can trap moisture.
  • Store: in a cool dry place away from sunlight, heat and pests.

4. Repairs and Restoration

  • Small repairs: repair small snags or unravelling edges quickly to prevent them getting worse over time.
  • Professional: avoid DIY patching or stitching unless you are experienced. Vintage rugs require a gentle touch. We have partnerships with experts in this field and can point you in the right direction or organise this for you, get in touch
